COMBINING OLD WITH NEW

Reports from the battlefield were often sent by telegraph. Morse code was a fairly new technology during the Civil War. We felt Twitter was similar to a modern-day telegram. With this in mind, the user can create a telegram using Morse code, then send it out to Twitter.

KEEPING ON BRAND

Although The HISTORY Channel tells stories about the past, they often bring a fresh perspective on things to avoid appearing stodgy or boring. They typically depict history through reenactments rather than black and white imagery. To keep with this theme, there were 4 different backgrounds that realistically depicted what life was like during the Civil War, accompanied by sound effects and factoids.

FLEXIBLE TEMPLATES

All of the content in the app was created using a custom CMS, edited by The HISTORY Channel. New content was to be displayed daily for 4 years. We created templates that gave The HISTORY Channel the option of using photos, videos, or only text. We planned for best-and worst-case scenarios to make sure everything looked consistent. For example, I created a mask to be applied over photos to produce a consistently worn look, as some photos were not as high-res as others.
